Joachim-Friedrich Martin Josef Merz, commonly known as Friedrich Merz, was born on 11 November 1955 in Brilon, Germany. He studied law and obtained a doctorate in jurisprudence from the University of Saarland. Merz began his professional career as a lawyer and businessman.

Friedrich Merz's political career commenced in 1994 when he was elected to the German Bundestag, the lower house of the parliament. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and served in various ministerial roles in the cabinet of Chancellor Angela Merkel. From 2009 to 2011, Merz held the position of Vice President of the European Commission.
